Microsystem Technology
The Chemnitz region is one of the most important microsystem technology clusters in Europe. This is mainly due to the intense research work going on at the Chemnitz University of Technology in the field of microtechnology. The university has a Centre for Microtechnology and departments of Measurement and Sensor Technology, Microsystem and Instrument Engineering, Microtechnology and Micro-manufacturing Technology. More than 500 university students are studying in this field and the first trainees have started their new professional qualification courses in microtechnology.
In addition, the Micro-devices Integration Department at the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration (IZM), and the Department of System Technology at the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology (IWU) are important non-university research partners. Companies like 3D Micromac, Amtec GmbH, the Gesellschaft für Mikroelektronikanwendungen Chemnitz mbH GEMAC, Memsfab GmbH and Microspace Mess- und Sensortechnik GmbH operate very successfully in Chemnitz.
Proximity to the most important user sectors - the motor industry and engineering/automation - is one particular advantage. And there are considerable wage advantages here in comparison with other microsystem technology sites.
Newly founded companies in the microsystem field or firms wishing to settle in the area will find an ideal environment from the beginning of 2009 onwards when the new Chemnitz microsystem technology park opens - it will be ideally suited to their specific needs.
